Summer Mon literature courses begin

-

The summer series of Mon literature courses as of March 2nd are  being offered by the Mon Literature & Buddhist Culture Association.

The history of the summer series is rooted in 1988, when Mon literature was banned.  It was only taught in monasteries led by monks during the summer months.

Ever since, Mon literature courses have been organized in the summer months every year, in each township, to help preserve and promote the literature, language, culture, and traditions of the Mon people.

“Each township is opening the summer Mon literature course throughout the Mon region. The starting date and graduation date may be the same for each township but there also may be some differences in the schedules. However, in all of the Mon region, exams will be taken together,” said Nai Mon Raraja, a member of the Mon Literature & Buddhist Culture Association.

The summer Mon literature courses are also typically  held in Karen State, and in the Tanintharyi, Yangon, Bago and Mandalay regions.

However due to armed conflicts taking place in Karen State and the Tanintharyi Region, there is uncertainty if the courses will be offered in these areas.

Last year, more than 180,000 students attended the summer Mon literature course, which involved nearly 5,000 monks and volunteer teachers.
