Nearly 60 civilians killed in in Tanintharyi Region, in first two months of 2023

According to data released by the non-governmental organization, Southern Monitor, in the first two months of 2023, there have been 59 civilian deaths recorded. 

In 2021, 87 civilians were killed and 56 civilians were injured. In 2022, there were 248 civilian deaths and 72 civilian injuries.

According to data compiled by Southern Monitor, from February 2021 to February 2023, there were a total of 394 civilian deaths, 146 civilian injuries, and a total of 540 civilian casualties.

Long Lon Township endured the largest number of civilians affected by the ongoing conflict, with a total of 107 civilian deaths and 29 civilian injuries.  Many civilian casualties  also took place in Ye Phyu, Dawei, Pulaw, and Thayet Chaung Townships. In addition 435 homes were burned to the ground, either by military council troops or its subordinate groups. 

In the month of February 2023 in Tanintharyi, there were 358 battles, 243 incidents of bombing, mine-laying, and drone attacks, and 397 incidents of assassination and civilian injuries.

Southern Monitor urges that all armed organizations adhere to military ethics to minimize civilian casualties.
