The 74th Mon National Day Celebration Committee (Central) issued a letter on the 17th of January, calling for limits on planned celebrations of Mon National Day, in accordance with the directives of the Ministry of Health and Sports due to COVID-19.
This year, Mon National Day falls on February 27.
Min Aung Htoo, Chair of the Mon National Day celebration committee (Central), told the Mon News Agency that the central celebrations were initially planned to be held in Thaton Township. Due to COVID-19, now the events will be held only in Mawlamyine in accordance with the directives of the Ministry of Health and Sports.
“It is a two-day program that will be broadcast live from the State Hall in Mawlamyine with a small audience. On the first day, there were singing competitions, mainly traditional dance (Yain) and competitions. The next day, the National Day celebration will be held with a small number of people, ” said Min Aung Htoo.
The Organizing Committee (Central) will be responsible for organizing the Chair’s speech, unveiling cultural, literature, and land posters, displaying the Mon flag and associated Mon clothing and associated logos.
Min Aung Htoo said, “There will also be small matches such as volleyball, tennis and football. The Mon literature competition will be held in accordance with the directives of the Minister of Health.”
The letter also called for the formation of Mon National Day celebration committees in each region as soon as possible and the implementation of the goals of the Mon National Day Celebration Committee (Central) and Mon National Day.
Objectives of the 74th Mon National Day Celebration (Central) include;
(1) To preserve the traditional history, strive for sustainable development of Mon religion, language and literary culture.
(2) To keep the Mon people alive, united and to work for the unity of all ethnic nationalities.
(3) To achieve full self-determination and equality for all ethnic peoples to create their own destiny, while also making efforts to build a genuine federal union.
