Mon Fellowship Association Urges Scholarship Support for Mon National College Students

-

The Mon Fellowship Association (Sahaimon), supported by the Mon community in Singapore, has launched a scholarship program for Mon National College students facing educational and financial difficulties.

Sahaimon has also urged the public to participate in the scholarship program, which will be funded through collective contributions from the Mon community.

Donors can contribute individually, collectively, or through a monthly support program.

The program will prioritise support for Mon students facing financial difficulties and those specialising in Mon language studies at Mon National College.

The number of students expected to receive support each academic year has yet to be decided, as discussions are still pending, reported an official, Nai Lawka Mon.

The total annual cost for a student at Mon National College, including tuition and other expenses, exceeds 3 million kyats. Since the 2023- 2024 academic year, the Mon National Education Committee (MNEC) has provided financial assistance to students facing difficulties through its MNEC Scholarship program.

Due to limited funding, not all students in need have been able to receive support, and many have continued to face financial challenges, according to a former student of Mon National College.

“They (MNEC) have limited funds, so they can only provide so much support. They mainly assist those who are truly in need. Most of the college students come from Mon National schools, and many of them are from poor backgrounds,” the former student said.

To support Mon youth who are eager to pursue education and to help increase the number of educated Mon professionals, the Mon Fellowship Association (Sahaimon) has called on all Mon people living in Singapore to contribute with a sense of national solidarity.

Mon National College was established in June 2022 in Nyisar Camp, an area controlled by the New Mon State Party (NMSP). The college operates under the Mon National Education Committee (MNEC) and offers an associate degree program with seven main fields of study.
