Earthquake-Injured Inmates at Mandalay’s Obo Prison Denied Adequate Medical Treatment

-

Inmates at Obo Prison in Mandalay, who sustained serious injuries during the recent earthquake, are being denied proper medical treatment, according to a statement released by the Political Prisoners Network – Myanmar (PPNM).

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck on March 28 severely damaged several buildings inside Obo Prison, including the Women’s Wards (1) and (2), the women’s prison hospital, and parts of the men’s workshop and perimeter walls.

PPNM confirmed that the collapse caused the deaths of four inmates: one male, two female, and one whose gender identity is still being verified.

In addition, at least nine inmates are in critical condition, and over 40 others reportedly require hospital care. Despite this, many of the injured remain untreated as they have been denied permission to be transferred to outside medical facilities.

PPNM stated that some of the injured prisoners are facing severe challenges due to the lack of medical care inside the prison and are unable to access necessary treatment. Furthermore, they are also being denied contact with family members.

The organization also noted that there is a dire shortage of medical supplies in the prison. Urgently needed items include antibiotics, antiseptics, wound dressings, and bandages.

PPNM is calling for immediate humanitarian assistance and for prison authorities to allow injured inmates access to professional medical care and communication with their families.
