Two young residents from Chaukmaing and Kywechankone neighborhoods in Mawlamyine, Mon State, were arrested and charged after allegedly posting critical comments about Myanmar’s military junta on social media.
The two individuals, identified as Ko Ye Htet Naing and Ko Min Htet Naing, face accusations of inciting public unrest and were charged under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code, which pertains to actions that could disrupt national stability, according to the junta. Their arrest reportedly took place on November 2 at Myinetharyar Police Station.
“They were stopped and searched in Chaukmaing, and officials found posts critical of the junta on their phones, which led to their arrest. However, their families have been allowed to visit them,” said a local resident familiar with the situation.
Both youths are currently detained at Myinetharyar Police Station and are facing trial in the Mawlamyine Township Court.
According to a report by the Myanmar Internet Project, 143 individuals across the country were arrested between August and October of this year for social media posts criticizing the military junta.
