The military junta launched an airstrike near “Thanpyar Chaung Pya” Village in Kyainseikgyi Township, Karen State, resulting in the death of one civilian and injuries to another.
On the morning of October 25, a Y-12 reconnaissance aircraft flew over the area, followed by an attack at around 1:00 p.m. by a Yak-130 fighter jet, which dropped two 500-pound bombs. According to the Karen National Union (KNU), one of the bombs exploded within the village, killing 30-year-old villager Saw The Mue and injuring 33-year-old Naw Eh Tar Mue.
Local reports indicate that the attack damaged two homes and a Christian church in the village.
“on the night of October 26, junta infantry battalions 545 and 546, based in Kyondoe, reportedly fired mortar shells into Nyaung Ywet Thar Village, Kawkareik Township. Two civilians were injured, including a husband and wife; the woman sustained injuries to her waist, while the man was hit in the leg,” said a local.
Kyondoe Township remains a hotspot for clashes between revolutionary forces and military troops.
In early 2023, heavy fighting in Kawkareik led to mortar shelling and arson attacks that destroyed about 100 homes in “Nyaung Ywet Thar” Village.
The KNU condemned the junta’s ongoing targeted attacks against civilian areas, which include both airstrikes and artillery bombardments, highlighting a deliberate pattern of attacks on civilian settlements.
