More Than half of Mon State’s Chicken and Duck Breeding Businesses Close Due to High Operating Costs

-

More than half of the chicken and duck farm operators in Mon State have closed their operations due to high prices of feed and medicine. A chicken and duck breeder from Mawlamyine said that the price of feed and medicine for farming has increased three times than before.

According to a member of the State Livestock Entrepreneurs Association, more than half of the stateā€™s livestock farm operators have shut down due to rising operating costs.

The Association member noted  there were about 300 commercial livestock operators in Mon State, but currently there are only just over 30 people who are still working.

“Entrepreneurs can’t bear it anymore. They can’t match the costs and returns. Production costs are increasing day by day,” he said.

He added that the price of livestock feed has increased from 20,000 kyats per bag to 73,000 kyats. No one is able to expand their business -the only option is to close down.

In Mon state, chickens, pigs, and ducks were popular options for livestock operators, while goats, cows, and quail tend to be raised at the individual level.
