Letter to President requests Mon National Day to be a public holiday

The division-level and state-level committees organising Mon National Day have submitted a letter to the President calling for the recognition of Mon National Day as an official public holiday.

On January 28th, the committee of organizing Mon National Day in Rangoon Division submitted a request letter to the President.

“For Mon National Day to become acknowledged by ethnic nationalities across the country and in honour of Mon people, we submit the letter as the Mon people’s wish,” said Nai Pe Tin, the chairman of organizing [69th] Mon National Day in Rangoon Division.

The letters to the President from Rangoon, Pegu and Tenasserim divisions as well as Karen State and Mon State’s central celebrations will include signatures of chairpersons from respective level committees of the 69th Mon National Day.

“It should at least an official holiday in Mon State. We also have submitted the letter on behalf of Pegu Division to recognize Mon National Day as a holiday,” said Nai Soe Thein, chairman of the committee for Mon National Day in Pegu Divison.

According to the 69th Mon National Day Centre committee, the committee has gathered letters from respective levels of Mon National Day committees and will submit the letters as soon as possible.

“We will send the letter on behalf of the township. We will submit the letter in the next a couple of days. We are just waiting for the chairman’s signature. We have the original letters from different levels. After we submit the letter to the president, we will send copies of the letters to the respective townships,” said Nai Mon Yarzar, joint-secretary of organizing committee of Mon National Day Centre, in an interview with MNA on February 3.

According to the Moulmein Township-level Mon National Day committee, the committee is campaigning and meeting with Mon businesspersons in Moulmein Township to have them close their offices for Mon National Day.

The first waning of Tabodwe or Mide – a Burmese/Mon lunar [calendar] date which falls on February 24, this year’s 69th Mon National Day date – is Mon National Day. It is the day to commemorate the foundation of the Mon Kingdom of Hongsawatoi, which is now still known as Pegu in lower Burma, by the two brothers Sammala and Wimala in Sarsana year of 1116.
