At least 55 women were killed in January as a result of airstrikes and ground attacks carried out by the military junta, according to data released by the Burma Women’s Union (BWU).

The group said the junta intensified aerial bombardments in resistance-controlled areas during the election period, leading to rising civilian casualties, including women.

Of the 55 women killed, 41 died in airstrikes, three were killed by artillery shelling, five died in landmine explosions, and five were killed in conflict-related sexual violence, BWU reported.

The deadliest single incident occurred on January 22, when junta aircraft bombed Kaung Ja village in Bhamo Township, Kachin State, killing eight women.

In Mon State, a 57-year-old woman and her three-year-old granddaughter were killed on January 26 when a bomb struck a house in Ahlugyi village, Bilin Township, at around 1 p.m., according to a local resident.

Airstrikes were also reported during January in Bilin and Kyaikto townships in Mon State; Kyainseikgyi, Kawkareik, Hpapun and Hlaingbwe townships in Karen State; and in parts of Tanintharyi Region, including Yebyu, eastern Dawei, Launglon, Myeik and Kyunsu.
