Man Injured by Landmine Explosion Near Military Base in Southern Myanmar

-

A local man was injured by a landmine explosion near a military base in Ahryutaung Village, Ye Township, Mon State, according to residents and local media reports.

The 50-year-old man was cutting bamboo near Light Infantry Battalion No. 343 on the morning of January 13 when a buried landmine detonated. A local resident said the explosion occurred after a bamboo stalk fell and struck the device.

The blast caused shrapnel injuries to the man’s head, abdomen, legs, and other parts of his body. He was taken to Lamine Hospital for treatment. His current condition was not immediately known.

The incident occurred in an area frequently accessed by plantation workers. Residents said no warning signs or barriers were visible at the site, raising concerns about civilian safety.

Ye Township has experienced ongoing conflict, and residents said landmines were planted near military positions last year to deter attacks by resistance groups. Local sources said civilians have previously received verbal warnings, but no formal markings were installed.

A similar incident was reported in the same area in early December, when a landmine killed a plantation worker’s dog, according to residents.

Landmine explosions have been reported repeatedly in parts of Ye Township, particularly near military installations and troop deployments.

According to data from the Independent Mon News Agency, at least three landmine incidents have occurred in Mon State so far in 2025, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.
