In Thaton Township, Mon State, two civilians were injured and several homes and a monastery were damaged after the military junta fired mortar shells and dropped bombs from drones on villages in Thaton Township, according to a statement from the Karen National Union (KNU) Central Committee.
The attacks occurred on the morning of November 6, when troops from the junta’s Light Infantry Battalion No. 314 and Infantry Battalion No. 9 fired seven mortar shells, two 120mm and five 60mm, into civilian areas. The shells landed in Naungkatoke, Hla Thar Khome Kwin, and Kyakhatchaung villages under the Kyakhatchaung tract, and near Michaungaing village under the Shweyaungpya tract, as well as in Chaung Saung village.
The following day, on November 7, junta troops continued their attacks, dropping 38 rounds of 81mm mortar shells from a Mi-17 military transport helicopter on multiple villages, including Yaewai, Naungkatoke (Upper), Kyauktaung, Kawthlaing, Winhpone Hill, Michaungaing, Shwe Kyi, and Yaetwinhpyu.
As a result, Naw Naing Naing (27) from Yaewai village and Saw Maung Win Myint (55) from Naungkatoke (Upper) village sustained shrapnel injuries.
In addition, the junta’s Infantry Battalion No. 9 fired six more 60mm mortar shells into Chaung Saung village and its surrounding areas, damaging farmland and destroying crops. Drone bombs also hit Chaung Saung and Shweyaungpya villages, damaging several houses.
The KNU accused the military junta of deliberately targeting civilian populations, saying the shelling and drone attacks took place even though no armed clashes were occurring in the area.
