An airstrike by the junta forces on Mrauk-U town in Rakhine State killed 12 civilians and injured 20 others, according to the Arakan Army (AA).
On August 25, around 11:25 PM, two bombs were dropped by a fighter jet on Dain Kyi ward in Mrauk-U. The AA stated that the attack killed 12 civilians, including five children, who were preparing donations along with family members and neighbors.
A witness said that among the more than 20 injured, at least five are in critical condition.
“The house that was bombed was not a donation site. After a funeral, people were sitting and talking outside because they didn’t feel safe sleeping inside. That was when the bombs hit. So far, 12 people have died, and about four or five of the injured are in serious condition,” the witness explained.
The AA accused the Junta of deliberately targeting civilians at night, when most people are asleep, to cause maximum casualties.
On January 18, 2025, a similar airstrike by the Junta on the outskirts of Ram Chaung village in Mrauk-U killed 28 family members of junta troops detained by the AA, including women and children, and injured 25 others.
Likewise, on May 14 and 15, 2025, consecutive airstrikes on Ywar Ma ward in Kyauktaw town killed eight civilians and injured 14, according to reports.
The AA claims that the Junta, which is losing ground nationwide, continues to target non-military sites such as schools, hospitals, markets, religious buildings, bridges, IDP camps, and densely populated towns and villages in Rakhine and across the country, committing war crimes daily.
The AA had announced on February 8, 2024, that it had completely captured Mrauk-U town.
On July 31, 2025, the Junta declared martial law in 63 townships under section 413(b), including 14 townships in Rakhine and Chin States under AA control.
