Mon Unity Party Announces Participation in Military Junta’s Election

-

The Mon Unity Party (MUP) has confirmed that it will participate in the upcoming general election organized by the military junta’s commission. MUP spokesperson Nai Than Shwe stated that the party made the decision during a Central Executive Committee meeting on August 17th.

“We held our meeting on the 17th, mainly to discuss domestic issues. All political parties plan to participate in the election to maintain their existence. We are now planning how and where we will compete,” Nai Than Shwe told IMNA.

He also added that the party is gradually preparing for candidate selection and vote-gathering efforts for the parliamentary candidate and other legislative bodies.

According to the Union Election Commission (UEC), the first phase of the general election will be held on December 28, 2025, under the 2008 Constitution, Section 399(a), the Union Election Commission Law Section 34(g), and its by-laws Section 16(a). The election will cover several townships nationwide, including ten townships in Mon State.

Although the MUP intends to contest the election, Nai Than Shwe acknowledged that some areas still do not have party representatives.

“For the Pyithu Hluttaw, we will participate where we have a chance of winning. In the State Hluttaw, some areas remain unclear, especially where we currently have no representatives. In these areas, we worry that votes could be lost if we cannot field candidates,” he explained.

He added that in townships such as Bilin and Kyaikhto, where the MUP has never previously won, the party sees an opportunity to compete due to the mixed proportional representation (PR) system being implemented alongside the First Past the Post (FPTP) system.

“Previously, we could not participate in some areas, but with the new PR system, we now have the chance to compete. We are still clarifying details with the election commission,” he said.

The National Unity Government (NUG) has stated that it will work to prevent the military junta’s planned election from being successfully carried out, and has called on all resistance forces not to participate in the election.
