-

A husband and wife from Htinshu village in Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State, were shot dead on August 6, according to local sources.

The incident occurred at around 11 a.m. between Linmathar and Htinshu villages. The victims were identified as 35-year-old Htike Ni and his wife, Mi Nyan, 40-year-old. They were reportedly attacked on the road while returning from the market.

Local sources claimed the couple was known for operating gambling dens in the area, selling pork, and secretly providing information to the military junta.

“They were military informants here. They ran gambling activities, sold pork and beef, and collected intelligence on the resistance,” a local source told IMNA.

Thanbyuzayat Township is an active conflict area with the presence of the Ramonnya Mon Army (RMA), Ye People’s Defence Force (YPDF), and Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA).

When contacted by IMNA about the incident, YPDF Battalion Commander Lieutenant Yan Naing said,  “we heard about the killing around 11 a.m. on August 6. We went to inspect the scene at about 4:30 p.m. We found a man and a woman shot dead. The area is part of our operations, but we only go there on missions. We can confirm our group was not involved in the attack.”

According to IMNA’s findings, the couple, both ethnic Mon from Htinshu village, were shot in the forehead by an armed group and died instantly at the scene.

Htinshu village has seen frequent resistance attacks on military junta positions. Military informants in the area are also regularly targeted and killed by resistance forces.
