Three Family Members from Mawkanin Village Remain Detained by the Military Junta

-

Three family members from Mawkanin Village in northern Ye Township, Mon State, who were arrested by the military junta on December 13, remain in detention as of today, according to local sources.

The arrests were carried out by Infantry Battalion 106, under the control of the 19th Military Operations Command headquartered in Ye Township. U Soe, a betel vendor, and his wife were detained near the village administration office at the Mawkanin road junction. The following day, their daughter, Ma Thin Thin, was also arrested from their home.

While the exact reason for their detention is unclear, locals suggest it may be linked to financial disputes. One resident stated, “They’ve been selling betel near the administration office for years. The debts they owe are substantial. Since there’s no local administrator to address the complaints, people escalated the matter to the military junta, leading to their arrest.”

Others speculate that U Soe’s arrest might also be related to alleged connections with revolutionary groups, alongside financial disputes.

“They haven’t been released yet, and there’s been no contact with them. The situation involves financial issues as well as other matters,” added another local.

Reports indicate that U Soe’s family is being held at Infantry Battalion 106, and no communication has been allowed.

In December alone, Ye Township has seen a series of arrests, with the junta detaining seven individuals, including striking teachers from the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), between December 12 and 15.

In junta-controlled areas like Ye Township, detainees are often subjected to swift military trials, with sentences delivered within days. Locals claim that release typically requires significant bribes, sometimes amounting to tens of lakhs of kyats, paid to military or police officials.

According to a report by the “Lagon Eain Bulletin” on human rights violations in Mon State, 13 individuals were detained by the junta in November. In the first 11 months of this year, 272 civilians in Mon State have been arrested by the military junta.
