Over 65 Massacres Since Military Coup, Study Finds

-

Since the military seized power over three years ago, there have been at least 65 incidents of mass killings, involving 10 or more victims, according to a report released by the ISP-Myanmar on October 23.

These incidents have resulted in the deaths of at least 1,307 civilians, with 92% of the killings attributed to the junta and its allied forces, including the Pyusawhti militia, the report stated.

Over half (52%) of the mass killings occurred in Sagaing Region, making it the most affected area.

One recent massacre took place between October 12 and 17 in Sagaing’s Budalin Township, where six villagers were reportedly found brutally mutilated after an assault by the junta’s 33rd Infantry Division.

The report also highlighted that other armed groups have been responsible for similar incidents. In November 2023, the Kokang militia reportedly killed 37 residents in Tanintharyi’s Thanant village.

The National Unity Government (NUG) and ethnic armed groups are gathering evidence to pursue legal action in the International Criminal Court (ICC).
