Military Junta Burns Down Homes in Maung Mae Shaung Village

-

According to local sources, the military junta troops have been burning down civilian homes in Maung Mae Shaung village in Dawei Township, Tanintharyi Region.

On September 22, around noon, resistance forces attacked the military junta troops stationed in Maung Mae Shaung village, leading to a clash between the two sides. After the fight, the military junta troops began burning down homes in the area.

Although there is currently no armed conflict in the area, the military junta troops incinerated houses in Maung Mae Shaung village on September 23, and the fire continued until the afternoon, as reported by the local residents.

“The fire became widespread and intense. It was extinguished just now. Before the recent battle, I saw soldiers in the houses in that village. The villagers were forced to flee the village for quite some time. The military has been living in the village for about two months,” said a local resident.

Two clashes between the military junta troops and the resistance forces in Maung Mae Shaung village have occurred in the past week. It is reported that there was heavy artillery fire coming from the junta’s Artillery Battalion 302, based in Zaha village, during the armed clashes.

“There isn’t just one specific battalion stationed there; there are many troops, including pro-regime militia. The military camped in the abandoned homes and then set them on fire. We still don’t know the exact number of houses being torched; the military keeps burning down homes in the village,” said a Tanintharyi People’s Defense Force spokesperson.

It is reported that the military junta troops often launch operations in Maung Mae Shaung village, often firing at and killing local residents.

In addition to the frequent clashes in Maung Mae Shaung village, the ongoing military control of the place also resulted in displacing many people.
