Military Junta and Political Parties Discuss Political and Security Issues

-

The National Solidarity and Peace-making Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) of the military junta met with representatives from various political parties to discuss the current political situation and security-related matters.

The discussions took place over three days, from August 21 to 23, in Naypyidaw. According to a statement from the military junta, the meeting was attended by Lieutenant General Tun Tun Naung, Chairman of the NSPNC, along with other committee members. Political party representatives included Dr. Aye Maung, Chairman of the Arakan Front Party (AFP), and other party members.

A participant in the meeting stated, “Topics included the 2008 Constitution, plans for holding elections, and the current political situation.”

Discussions reportedly covered various proposals regarding amendments to the 2008 Constitution, issues surrounding the organization of elections, and the current political and security situation in the country. However, specific details regarding which sections of the Constitution might be amended were not disclosed.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the military junta, had previously announced plans to conduct a nationwide census before the end of this year, with elections scheduled for next year.

However, with ongoing conflicts across the country, where opposition forces have seized several strategic military bases and over 70 towns, there is growing skepticism about the feasibility of the junta’s election plans.
