A local resident from Yetagon village in Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State, sustained severe injuries after stepping on a landmine on August 22, according to local sources.
The victim, identified as 30-year-old Ko Soe Than, was collecting firewood near a rubber plantation close to the village monastery when the landmine detonated at around 9 a.m.
The explosion caused serious injuries to both of Ko Soe Than’s legs, leaving him with severe shrapnel wounds. He was quickly transported to Thanbyuzayat Township Hospital by a local humanitarian group for medical treatment.
The area where the incident occurred is near the main road between Thanbyuzayat, Ye, and Dawei, which the military junta has been attempting to regain control over. The military has established positions and patrols in the surrounding villages.
Clashes between the military and local resistance forces have become almost daily occurrences in the region. Locals suspect that the landmine Ko Soe Than stepped on was planted by the junta’s troops, who have been active in the area.
