Mon Revolution Day Ceremony to be Scaled Down Due to Political Situation

-

Due to the current political situation, the 77th Mon Revolution Day ceremony, which will fall on the Full Moon Day of Wagaung (August 19), will be conducted on a smaller scale, according to the organizing committee.

Mon Revolution Day is usually celebrated with great enthusiasm by Mon youth and the community at Win Sein Taw Ya Monastery in Mudon Township, Mon State, where the tombs of Mon leaders are located. However, this year, due to the prevailing political circumstances, the ceremony will be held briefly in Mawlamyine Township, focusing on paying respects to fallen Mon leaders.

“We’ve planned a scaled-down ceremony in Mawlamyine. In other areas, communities will observe the day in their own way, but there won’t be any speeches or large gatherings. The focus will be on paying tribute to our fallen leaders. Given the current political situation, we are unable to organize more extensive events,” said an official from the organizing committee.

On Mon Revolution Day, the Mon community traditionally pays respects at the tombs of key Mon revolutionary leaders such as Nai Aung Tun (Panga Village), Nai Non Lar (Hneepadaw), Nai Pho Sein (Kamarwet), Nai Mon Chan (Kamarwet), Nai Thein Maung (Paung), and New Mon State Party leaders Nai Shwe Kyin, Nai Htin, and Nai Rot Sa, all of whom are buried at Win Sein Taw Ya Monastery.

The Mon Revolution Day ceremonies are typically led by Mon youth and the Mon community, with additional events held in territories controlled by the New Mon State Party. Since the military coup, newly formed Mon revolutionary groups have also commemorated the day.

Mon Revolution Day commemorates the attack on a police station in Zar Ta Pyin village, Mawlamyine Township, on the Full Moon Day of Wagaung in 1948 by a group of over 20 Mon youths, marking the beginning of the Mon Revolution.
