In Tanintharyi Township, Tanintharyi Region, the number of flood victims has increased, adding to the already significant number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to ongoing conflict. As a result, there is an urgent need for shelter and food, according to relief workers.
Since the last week of July, rising water levels of the Tanintharyi River have forced not only IDPs but also other local residents from various neighborhoods and villages to relocate to higher ground. However, the available shelters are insufficient, according to the relief worker.
“With the flood, more people are seeking help. The IDPs have been moved to higher ground due to flooding in their camps, but the emergency shelters are inadequate. We are struggling to provide enough food with limited resources, and road access from Myeik for supplies is currently cut off,” said the relief worker.
At least 14 villages in Tanintharyi Township are affected by the floods. Local sources reported that many of the flood victims are suffering from ailments such as diarrhea, dysentery, and malaria.
Tanintharyi Township is heavily impacted by the military junta’s restrictions on food and essential supplies, hindering the efforts of relief organizations.
“The township is facing severe flooding, and there are many IDPs as well. The military junta’s blockade makes it difficult for aid workers to reach those in need. There’s a significant demand for help,” they said.
In addition to the inadequate shelter, IDPs are enduring harsh weather conditions, and women among the IDPs are experiencing a shortage of monthly necessities, noted a local relief worker.
During the current flooding in Tanintharyi, one man has drowned, and another is reported missing.
