Min Lyon – The Mon Democracy Party (MDP) announced at the recent Mon National Conference they are prepared to represent their constituency during the 2015 national elections, said MDP General Secretary Dr. Min Soe Lin.

“Because our party is an old party, we do not need to prepare much… (we) are ready for the elections,” said the general secretary.

The MDP was previously known as the Mon National Democratic Front (MNDF). But after contesting the 1990 elections they were forced to disband by the former military ruling State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC). In 2010, MDP registered under their current name, setting their sights on the upcoming national elections.

Nai Kyaw Win, MDP’s Foreign Affair officer-in charge told IMNA that part of MDP’s mandate includes consultations with other ethnicity from Burma.

“We have discussed about the matters of Mon ethnic and other ethnics concerned with current political situation in Burma.”

Currently Min Soe Lin, Nai Kyaw Win and Mi Kon Htaw, MDP executive committee member, are in Malaysia for a meet and greet with migrant Mon social groups and individuals. The trip allows the party a chance to reiterate their political position amidst Burma’s changing political landscape. About 1500 people residing in areas of the country with large concentrations of the Mon ethnicity gathered to hear what the MDP leaders had to say.

Today the MDC leaders visit the federal capital city Kuala Lumpur.
