The Mon State Parliament has approved, without objection, a proposal calling for effective action against loudspeaker box systems that have become increasingly widespread across Mon State.
The proposal was submitted by U Tin Yi, a Mon State Parliament representative for Bilin Township Constituency No. 2, on June 9 during the first day of the Third Mon State Parliament’s Second Regular Session.
According to the proposal, loudspeaker box systems can negatively affect public health and cause disturbance to local communities, and therefore should be effectively regulated, restricted, and prevented.
The proposer also said that excessive noise from loudspeaker box systems has contributed to an increase in hearing problems, high blood pressure, heart disease, stomach disorders, and intestinal illnesses.
During the parliament session on June 12, four parliament representatives and Parliament Speaker U Thet Htwe discussed the proposal and offered recommendations in support of it. The proposal was subsequently approved without opposition.
According to the state military junta administration, anyone wishing to use loudspeakers must obtain permission from the relevant ward or village tract administrator under Chapter 9, Section 18 of the 2012 Ward and Village Tract Administration Law and comply with the prescribed regulations.
Regarding the proposal, U Tin Zaw Htun, the military junta-appointed Minister for Social Affairs of Mon State, said, “If users of loudspeakers fail to comply with the rules and regulations, effective action will be taken under Sections 25, 26, and 27 of Chapter 9 of the Ward and Village Tract Administration Law.”
Under Sections 25, 26, and 27 of the Ward or Village Tract Administration Law, violators may face up to six months in prison in addition to fines.
