Junta Orders Retake of University Entrance Exam in Quake-Hit Areas

-

The state-run Kyemon newspaper announced today (April 22) that the university entrance exam for the 2025 academic year will be reconducted in regions and states where answer sheets were destroyed in fires caused by recent earthquakes.

The powerful Mandalay earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28 caused the most severe damage in Mandalay, Sagaing, Nay Pyi Taw, and Shan State.

Due to the collapse and subsequent fire at the main building of Mandalay University, nearly 400,000 answer sheets from around 60,000 students from Mandalay, Sagaing, and Kachin States were lost.

According to the announcement, the university entrance exam will be reconducted from June 16 to 21 in the affected areas.

A local resident in Nay Pyi Taw told the Independent Mon News Agency that the military council’s decision shows a lack of compassion for students affected by both war and natural disasters.

“They don’t show any sympathy to the children who are already traumatized by the earthquake. In Sagaing, some children didn’t just lose their exams—they lost their lives. Some school principals, teachers, and staff also died. Responsible leaders should support families and children affected by both war and natural disasters. Many students lost their homes and books in the quake. What are they supposed to study with now?” the resident said.

According to the Department of Examinations under the military council, the exam subjects will be held as follows: June 16: Myanmar Language, June 17: English. June 18: Mathematics, June 19: Chemistry and Geography, June 20: Physics and History, and June 21: Biology and Economics. These exams will be conducted consecutively without any break.

Only students who had completed all subjects during the March 2025 exam will be allowed to retake the test. Lists of eligible candidates will be announced at the township education offices and examination departments in the relevant states and regions.

According to the Department of Examinations, exam admission cards for the June university entrance exam can be collected in person at the designated exam centers from June 1 to 15 through the respective chief invigilators.
