Military junta leader Min Aung Hlaing stated in a message marking the 51st Mon State Day that power would be transferred to the government formed through a general election.

In his message released on March 19, Min Aung Hlaing reiterated that the military junta was working toward holding a “free and fair multi-party democratic election” to reflect the will of the people. He emphasized that once an elected government emerged, state responsibilities would be handed over.
He also urged the public, including the Mon ethnic community, to participate in efforts to ensure the election takes place.
Min Aung Hlaing previously announced during his visit to Belarus on March 7 that elections were planned for December 2025 or January 2026.
However, the military junta’s proposed election has been widely dismissed as illegitimate. Over the past four years since the coup, the junta has extended the state of emergency seven times, leading many to doubt its promises.
A Mon youth activist expressed skepticism, stating, “There is no reason to believe them. The military, obsessed with power, will never hold a fair election. Their words are just another way to deceive and oppress the people, especially ethnic communities.”
In addition to election-related remarks, Min Aung Hlaing’s message also called on ethnic armed groups involved in ongoing clashes to cease activities that could threaten national security.
The 51st Mon State Day celebrations were held on March 18 in Mawlamyine, featuring exhibitions, local product displays, and traditional food stalls. The event was attended by senior junta officials, including General Aung Lin Dwe, ministers, and deputy ministers.
Due to the presence of high-ranking military officials, security in Mawlamyine was heightened, with movement restrictions imposed near the airport and key intersections. Locals reported increased security checks, making travel within the city difficult.
Despite the junta’s efforts, Mon people showed little interest in the event, with attendance primarily consisting of government staff and small business owners required to participate.
