The military junta-appointed Mon State Chief Minister and his administration have directed the organizers for the grand celebration of Mon State Day on March 19th to reinforce the narrative of peace and stability in the region.
At a coordination meeting held on February 28th at the state government office, Chief Minister, U Aung Kyi Thein emphasized that the 51st Mon State Day should be widely celebrated.
According to locals in Mawlamyine, the military junta and its allies are prioritizing propaganda messages rather than addressing ongoing security issues and crimes affecting the public.

“There are conflicts everywhere, and they know they are suffering losses. But they want to show that Mawlamyine and Mon State are peaceful and well under control. It does not benefit the people, but since it aligns with the dictatorship’s agenda, they will make sure the celebration is grand,” one resident commented.
The event will feature traditional Mon dances, government-sponsored exhibitions, and small business product displays. However, small business owners and government employees are reportedly facing pressure to participate.
Security has been tightened around the planned venue, the Thamein Bayan multi-purpose grounds in Mawlamyine, with increased searches and arrests, causing mobility difficulties for residents.
“Security checks have become much stricter. Last night, inspections took place in many areas. They are also arresting people without motorcycles. Usually, checks are done in one or two places, but now they have intensified,” a local said.
Additionally, the military junta has issued orders prohibiting loud noises, including fireworks, and temporarily suspending gambling operations during February and March, as students take university entrance and promotion exams.
Locals are critical of the Mon State government for using the celebration to shift public focus away from resistance movements and to spread psychological warfare propaganda.
