Hundreds of Chinese Nationals Arrive in Three Pagodas Pass Within Days

-

Nearly 400 Chinese nationals have recently moved into Three Pagodas Pass, a town on the Thailand-Myanmar border in Karen State, according to local sources.

Since early 2025, Thai authorities have intensified crackdowns on online scam operations in Myawaddy and Shwe Kokko. A local resident reported that some groups have assisted in relocating Chinese nationals to the Three Pagodas Pass area.

“On January 26, about 400 Chinese nationals arrived, moving from Myawaddy. A significant number have relocated here. Previously, the BGF (Border Guard Force) was responsible for them, but with increasing pressure, they no longer take charge. The situation in Myawaddy is expected to tighten further in February,” the resident explained.

Previously, Chinese nationals entered the Three Pagodas Pass area with support from the DKBA (Democratic Karen Benevolent Army) through the Mawlamyine-Kyaikmayaw route. However, according to sources, most now use the Kyaikmayaw-Kawkareik route.

Due to warnings from armed groups, including the Karen National Union (KNU), Chinese nationals are facing difficulties settling in the area, residents said.

Currently, the Chinese nationals in Three Pagodas Pass do not move around the town in large groups. However, they are believed to be operating online scam businesses from rented houses and restaurants.

A local source noted, “These newly arrived Chinese people are not roaming the town like locals. DKBA has arranged ready-made accommodations for them. Some stay in rental houses, while others operate in beauty salons and restaurants.”

These Chinese nationals are believed to be fugitives involved in online scam syndicates who spend large sums of money to remain in hiding.

As Thailand and China continue joint operations to crack down on scam networks based in Myawaddy, locals expect an increase in Chinese nationals crossing into Three Pagodas Pass.

Since Chinese nationals first arrived in Three Pagodas Pass in May 2024, numerous buildings have been under construction. Additionally, construction materials, including concrete, have been stockpiled, making it difficult for local residents to purchase supplies.

On January 24, Thailand’s police chief met with China’s Assistant Public Security Minister in Bangkok to discuss collaborative efforts in dismantling cross-border online scam networks. Following the meeting, the Thai government reaffirmed its commitment to punishing those involved.

Meanwhile, Myanmar’s military leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, stated on February 3 during a Union Government meeting in Naypyidaw that authorities would take decisive action against military officials found to be involved in scam syndicates.
