Junta Likely to Extend Rule by Another Six Months, Resistance Forces Say

-

Myanmar’s military junta is expected to extend its rule for another six months, according to resistance forces.

The junta previously extended the state of emergency for six months in late July 2024, and its current term is set to expire on January 31, 2025.

Dr. Thiri Mon Chan, Commander-in-Chief of the Mon State Defense Force (MSDF), stated, “The six-month term is about to end. It is almost certain that the junta will extend it again on January 31.”

Since seizing power, the military junta has repeatedly used Section 425 of the 2008 Constitution to justify extensions of the state of emergency. The upcoming February 1 will mark four years since the initial declaration.

Colonel Min Tun, Commander-in-Chief of the Arakan Army/Arakan National Council (AA/ANC), noted that the junta does not operate with political integrity and will likely prolong the emergency period.

“It’s not surprising at all. If they want to extend it, they will. Politically speaking, they lack integrity. If they can’t hold elections, their best option is to extend the term to maintain legitimacy. Otherwise, they’ll just keep ruling as they are. But the real question is—under what authority will they continue to govern? I believe they will extend the term,” he said.

A political figure remarked that the junta will extend its term in various ways, and resistance forces must continue their fight.

Colonel Khun Ukkar of the Pa-O National Liberation Organization (PNLO-NCA/S) stated that conflicting reports have been circulating about the junta’s decision.

“There are mixed reports. Some say they will extend it, while others suggest they may not because their allies and neighboring countries no longer support them. There’s also talk that power might be returned to the National Defense and Security Council (NDSC). If that happens, the state of emergency will be revoked, and a new governing body will replace the military-appointed interim government. Under the constitution, this transitional government would have to hold elections within six months,” he explained.

The junta has previously announced plans to hold elections in 2025. However, the National Unity Government (NUG) has vowed to prevent the election from taking place.
