Residents of Myaukchaw village in Yebyu Township, Tanintharyi Region, are facing ongoing challenges in rebuilding their lives after their homes were set ablaze during a recent military clash, according to local sources.
On June 19, a fierce battle erupted near Myaukchaw between the military junta and joint forces, forcing thousands of villagers to flee for safety. In the aftermath, junta forces, which had sustained significant casualties, reportedly retaliated by bombing and setting fire to the deserted village, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
Over 30 homes in Myaukchaw were destroyed, along with valuable belongings, motorcycles, and cars, all of which were deliberately set alight by the military. Although the junta forces withdrew from the area in late June, the damage was done. Villagers who have returned now face the daunting task of rebuilding their lives with little to no resources.
While some families have managed to return to their homes, those who lost everything in the fires find themselves without shelter or food, prompting some to seek refuge across the border in Thailand.
Efforts to assist the displaced residents by the New Mon State Party and the Mon Relief and Rehabilitation Committee have been ongoing, but locals report that the support has been insufficient to meet their needs.
