Since the military coup, nearly 5,800 airstrikes have occurred across the country, according to a report released by the Institute for Strategy and Policy – Myanmar (ISP-Myanmar) on August 5.
Out of the country’s 330 townships, at least 147 have experienced airstrikes, equating to 45% of the total townships affected.
Shan State has faced the highest number of airstrikes, with over 1,500 incidents, followed by the Karenni region with more than 1,200 incidents, according to the report.
The airstrikes in northern Shan State have doubled following the 1027 military operations, and there has been no reduction in the frequency of these attacks, the report states.
A Mon human rights activist commented, “The airstrikes haven’t decreased. They’ve increased. When the military junta’s aircraft come, they usually stay for only about 15 to 20 minutes but cause extensive damage. They drop bombs weighing 500, 1,000, or 2,000 pounds, and just one strike can devastate nearly half a village.”
In January alone, there were over 650 airstrikes, making it the month with the highest number of such attacks. According to ISP Myanmar’s data, 33 townships in Sagaing Region and at least 25 townships in Shan State experienced airstrikes during this period.
