In the first half of 2024, nearly 15,000 civilian homes across the country were destroyed by arson, carried out by members of the military junta, according to a report released by Data For Myanmar.
The report highlights that the most extensive damage occurred in Rakhine State’s Buthidaung Township, where intense military operations led to the burning of thousands of civilian homes. Significant incidents were also reported in Sagaing, Mandalay, and Magway regions.
Most of the destruction was caused by mortar shelling, airstrikes, and naval attacks conducted by junta forces.
Additionally, since March 24, clashes between the military junta and allied resistance groups have intensified. These clashes, involving naval and air strikes by the junta, have resulted in the destruction of 416 homes along the Gyaing River, which borders Mon State and Kayin State. Local residents in these areas are still in need of food and assistance.
Data For Myanmar also noted that in June, over 1,000 homes were burned across the country. Notable incidents include nearly 70 homes in Myaukchaw Village and 5 homes in Mu Du (West) Village, both located in Tanintharyi Region’s Yepyu Township.
The widespread arson has forced many villagers to flee their homes, causing significant hardships and a lack of adequate support from local communities.
The ongoing conflict between the military junta and resistance forces continues to intensify, with villages supporting the resistance often targeted and destroyed. According to the report, over 95,000 civilian homes have been lost to arson since the military coup over three years ago.
