A mine explosion on the Ma Saw Bridge on the Yangon-Mawlamyine Highway in Bilin Township, Mon State, resulted in the death of one tourist and serious injuries to three others, according to local residents.
The 106-foot-long, 24-foot-wide Ma Saw Bridge was detonated at around 4:45 a.m. on May 23. The explosion caused three motorcycles crossing the bridge to fall into the creek below, killing one rider and seriously injuring a man and two women.
The attack severely damaged the bridge, disrupting road communication in the area.
“Two-thirds of the bridge fell into the stream. The remaining part is impassable for cars, effectively cutting off road connection,” said a local resident.
Local social aid and rescue groups transported the dead and injured to the hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment.
The destruction of the Ma Saw Bridge has interrupted the flow of goods and travel between Mon, Karen, Tanintharyi, and Yangon.
Earlier, on May 11, the Kyung Eide Bridge on the Yangon-Mawlamyine highway between Thaton and Bilin townships was also detonated for the second time, further disrupting transportation in the region.
