The Mon Unity Party (MUP) has applied to the Union Election Commission to establish a party under the name of the Mon Progress Party for Karen State.
The Union Election Commission announced that the Mon Development Party applied for a party establishment permit on August 30.
If the permit is granted, a Mon Development Party would be able to participate in the junta council elections in Karen State. The rationale for the move was explained by a MUP official.
“If we apply for party registration under the name of Mon Unity Party (Karin State), it will not be allowed because the party name is the same. That’s why we applied for party registration under the name of the Mon Development Party,” said the official.
He added that the party’s policies are the same as that of the Mon Unity Party, and it applied solely as a political party to be established in Karen State.
The Union Election Commission is verifying the application.
The Mon Unity Party began the application process last March, but it has not yet received a decision or outcome.
The Women’s Party (Mon) also applied to the Union Election Commission for permission to establish and register their party, and completed their registration process.
Under Article 3 of the Political Parties Registration Law, 14 parties have applied, and 50 parties have applied to continue as political parties under Article 25.
