Although a Mon National College was opened in Nyi Sar camp in the area under the control of the New Mon State Party (NMSP), and the students have studies have already started last June, the construction of the school building will begin next December.
Although the Mon National College has been established, the school buildings are not ready for the students to study. Currently, they are teaching just conveniently in the buildings constructed by the Mon National Education Committee.
Therefore, the Mon National College Steering Committee has been making efforts to obtain donations from local/expatriate Mon people and other ethnic people, and under the current situation, only more than 130 Million Kyat have been received.
Mi Sar Dar, the Director of the Mon National Education Department said “We have prepared more than 10 acres of land to build the school. The next donation is more than one hundred million Kyat. The school building is designed in the form of two floors. It will be done step by step. Students are looking forward to a new school building.”
The fund search committee has estimated that 600 Million Kyat or more than 200,000 US dollars, will be needed for the building of the Mon National College, and 200 Million Kyat, or more than 65,000 US dollars, will be needed to operate the education activities every year.
In the current situation, a total of nearly 300 students are attending and studying at Mon National College. Due to the fact that subjects are being taught online using the Zoom system, there are also communication problem with the internet, including the lack of electricity and computers.
The principal of Mon National College, Dr. Ponnya Mon, said, “We all know that building a college is a big responsibility. The teachers who are teaching are not fully qualified. The teachers teaching are not fully qualified. After school, do the students from this college get a job or not? Other local/foreign universities to recognize your college. There are still a lot of difficulties with the internet and electricity issues. However, the school building will be built first with funds provided by donors. I still can’t say when it will be over.”
Therefore, Dr. Ponnya Mon urged that the entire Mon people should cooperate for the long-term sustainability of the advanced Mon National College and the quick completion of the school building.
There are six subjects namely Social Science, Mass Media and Journalism, Leadership and Management, Education Teaching, Education Management and Mon Literature, and Associate Degree of Art will be given at the Mon National College.
