The Shwe Hin Thar, Mon Traditional Dance, will be included in the ethnic dance category in this year’s 23rd Myanmar Traditional Singing, Dance, Composing, and Performing contest. The contest will be in Nay Pyi Taw in October.
In the previous year, Rahkine and Karen traditional dances were both included in the contest.
A course to teach the Mon traditional dance (aka Mon Yin) will be held for ten days from June 5 to 16 under the leadership of the Mon Archaeological Culture Group. Mi Ma Rot Swan (B), and Mi Mya Than, will be the Directors of the Mon Traditional Dance Competition.
“Since all ethnic groups have to compete with at least one Mon dance at the national level competition, we chose the Shwe Yinthar Pyaw San Yar song because it is familiar. For other ethnic groups who do not know this dance, we will hold a 10-day refresher course for instructors to help them teach this dance. We will divide the 28 dance instructors into divisions and states,” said Mi Ma Rot Swan(B)
Dance instructors have been sent to Yangon, Sagaing and Ayeyarwady Region, and the rest will be sent to other divisions and states.
Khin Maung Oo, Minister for Ethnic Affairs in Mon State, said, “There are 14 divisions and states that will compete in the 23rd Myanmar Traditional Singing, Dance, Composing, and Performing contest. All 14 groups will compete in the Mon traditional Dance category. For this, we have trained Mon youth to teach our traditional dance.”
The Mon cultural group will not participate in the competition, but will perform the dance.
