Suspects arrested in connection with the killing of World Health Organization staff person

Police have arrested suspects in connection with the killing of a World Health Organization (WHO) staff member near Salween Garden in Moulmein Township.

WHO staffer, Myo Min Htut was shot dead near the entrance of Thanlwin Garden, Science School Road, Thein Gone Ward, June 8, at 6 pm.

The UN Secretary General,  Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the killing of the WHO staffer last Friday.  He also called for an investigation of the killing to be transparent and comprehensive, leading to the perpetrators being punished according to the law .

An investigation into the killing has led to the arrest of  a 21-year-old man living in the corner of Wah Poe and Strand Roads, in the Maung Ngan Ward, Mawlamyine Township, at around 7 pm on June 9.  A  bomb, pistol and ammunition were found at the residence.

The investigation also led to a search of another house on Moulmein’s Extension 7 Road where a handgun and grenade were discovered. The source close to the investigation reported that a man jumped out of the house around 9pm resulting in his death, while another individual, an unidentified woman thought to be close to the  victim, was arrested.

The investigation is ongoing.
