According to salt farmers, the price of raw salt has risen to 300 kyats per viss (roughly 1.63 kilograms) due to the destruction of salt fields in Mon State.

Heavy rains have damaged the salt flats. For the third time this year, severe weather has led to a rise in prices.
“The price of salt has gone up. The salt inventory has been depleted, and the production of salt has gone down, so the price will go up. Some are buying and selling for up to 350 kyat /viss,” said a salt farmer from Thanbyuzayat Township.
In Mon State, the price of raw salt was 300 kyats/viss after the third instance of heavy rains, and up to 250 kyats per viss of fine salt.
Another salt farmer said, “The price goes up because of low yields, and there is no salt left, — it is a hardship for us.”
In Mon State, there are about 2,900 acres of salt fields, with many operations in Ye Thanbyuzayat , and Paung townships.
