Mi Wai Thi Phyo, Amyotha Hluttaw candidate from Mon Unity Party (MUP), aged 32, went to Three Pagodas Pass Town, from her Ywa Thit Village, on Thai-Myanmar border in the evening of June 8. On the way to TPP, an unknown group on motorbikes approached her and shot her dead.
The unknown gunman used an AK-47, noted investigators who found bullet casings at the scene.
“Mi Wai Thi Phyo was driving her car to Three Pagodas Pass from her village to stay for the night in the town. A gunman driving a motorbike approached her from the back of the car as she was leaving her village. The gunman shot her 3 times till dead. She was rushed to hospital but died when she reached the hospital,” said a resident of the Three Pagodas Pass Town.
The New Mon State Party (NMSP), and the Mon Unity Party, have both strongly denounced the killing.
The NMSP stated that it would seek to unveil the perpetrators, who violently killed Mi Wai Thi Phyo.
They noted that Mi Wai Thi Phyo actively supported the Mon community.
The MUP’s also strongly condemned any acts that lead to violence and which could disrupt the forming of a democratic federal union that represented all ethnic groups.
Other organizations including the Europe Mon Unity Association (EMUA) and Mon National Network (MNN) also released statements denouncing the violent act.
