The National Unity Government (NUG), formed by the Committee of Representatives from the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), consists of 11 ministries. The new government has considerable diversity, and not all ministries are dominated by National League for Democracy representatives. Two deputy ministers that are from Mon and Chin ethnic groups have been appointed to the National Unity Government.
The NUG government was formed on April 16, and includes the Deputy Minister of Defense Nai Kaung Ro, and the Minister of Planning, Finance and Investment, Min Zeyar. Nai Kaung Ro is a member of the NMSP Central Committee and a retired member of the Army Commanding Committee. He holds the rank of Major. He has 40 years of experience in revolution. Min Zeyar Oo, a former secretary of the Union Peace Talks Joint Committee, recently formed the Mon National Network after resigning from the Mon National Party (MUP).
Political observers are positive of these latest developments.
“I see the formation of the NUG government as a good first step. And we are glad that two Mon people joined and support us. We should accept the good intentions of the NUG government, the End Result,” said Nai Thiri Mon Chan, a member of the Overseas Mon Coordination Committee (OMCC) steering committee.
He added, “The NUG government is newly formed and is incomplete. To be effective, I think it would be better if there was a Federal Army as demanded by the people, to fight the military dictatorship. Also I think it would be better if we could attract all ethnic groups, for this initiative to be the best possible governance body.”
The State Administration Council (SAC), which is a creation of the military junta, has declared the CRPH an illegal organization and defines the NUG as an illegal government.
Nonetheless, statements of support from various political parties and organizations regarding the establishment of the National Unity Government (NUG) have appeared on social media.
Meanwhile, Dr. Banya Aung Moe of the Mon Unity Party (MUP) and Nai Lay Yitama, a member of the Mon State Administrative Council, have chosen to serve as members on the State Administrative Council.
