22222 Spring Revolution, Hundreds of Thousands Protest in Mawlamyine

(Mawlamyine, Mon State) Hundreds of thousands of people marched in a nationwide strike against the military dictatorship in what has been dubbed the 22222 Spring Revolution.  The tag represents 22 days of protests culminating on February 22 –numerically represented as 22222. 

The protests In Mawlamyine have attracted participants from a wide array of sectors,  that include workers from the Education and Health  sector, Myanmar Railways,  the Myanma Post Office , Myanmar lawyers, private insurance employees, and pharmaceutical companies.  In addition, students and alumni from Mawlamyine University marched alongside vendors, merchants, and thousands of other local people.

Protesters held placards with slogans such as “We Don’t Accept MILITARY COUP”, “END THE DICTATORSHIP IN MYANMAR”, “RESPECT Human Rights”, “STOP VIOLENCE”, “GET OUT DICTATOR”, “GIVE BACK DEMOCRACY”, “JOIN IN CDM”, “Don’t Go To Work”.

Almost all shops closed across the city on February 22.

In Thanbyuzayat and Ye, tens of thousands of people also protested in the 22222 Spring Revolution against the military dictatorship. Almost all shops in the city were reportedly closed for the day.

Anti-military protests continue to erupt on a daily basis in all parts of Burma.

Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday in Pyinmana, Naypyidaw, arresting more than 100 protesters. They also try to arrest the journalists filming the event, according to Nay Pyi Taw-based reporters.
