The number of armed incidents increased slightly in July compared to June since 27 armed clashes and two incidents involving handmade mines took place in July, totaling to 29 incidents nationwide, the Myanmar Institute for Peace and Security (MIPS) reported on Facebook.

According to information logged in the MIPS’s Township-based Conflict Monitoring System (TCMS), 17 armed incidents took place in June.

MIPS stated that Hpakant Township in Kachin State and Mong Kung Township in Shan State were most affected, experiencing at least 5 clashes each. Namtu Township in northern Shan State experienced at least 4 clashes.

According to Burma Monitor’s record of clashes that took place in July, fighting raged between the Tatmadaw and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) in Hpakant Township for over a week since July 14. The KIA spokesperson Col Naw Bu said he did not know the casualty list in detail.

Based on the interview with Mong Kung State Hluttaw MP Sai Lon, Burma Monitor reported that 357 people from 102 households took shelter in Lwel Settaw Monastery and 94 people from 30 households took shelter in Kone Mone Monastery in Ham Ngaing Village due to the clashes between the Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS) and the Tatmadaw near Nam Oke-Nar Lay Village in Mong Kung Township, northern Shan State on July 10. Local residents also fled to Ton Law, Nam Lan, and Kyethi, Mongyai, and Mong Kung areas.

Around 700 residents from ten villages were forced to flee during the clashes between the RCSS and the combined forces of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the Shan State Progress Party (SSPP) in Namtu Township, northern Shan State on July 16-17.

Armed conflicts took place in 11 townships in June and they took place in 14 townships in July, leading to a slight expansion of the affected areas, the MIPS stated.
