“There are at least 10,000 voter error on the voter list in Moulmein (Mawlamyaine) constituency. Dead people are on the voters list. People not currently in the villages have been listed, too. Voter names appear repeatedly. It was discovered that a couple families lost their places on voting lists,” said Nai Ong Chan.

Error on the voter lists could have been corrected to complaints submitted to the Union Election Commission, but township and village authorities did not take any serious action to check for a correct voter list, continued Nai Ong Chan.

One voter in Moulmein explained that not all of her family members’ names appeared on the voter lists at the Ward Administrative Office.

“We have five family members. My mother and sister want to vote for the NLD. I support the Mon party, but my name was not on [the voter list] so I had to register. When I arrived at the administrative office, they said my mother’s and sister’s names were not on the list. Because we want to vote for the Mon party and the NLD, they didn’t want us include [on the list],” said a voter from Moulmein constituency.

In Ka-Doe and Kaw-Hnut villages in Moulmein township, the township administrative officers listed people who are currently working in abroad and students studying in other towns, but also specified that those names are representing advance voters, according to Nai Ong Chan.

According to voting sources, the voter lists in Taung Ngu exclude the names of eligible voters and contain numerous errors in ID Card numbers and family names.

There are 6,484,562 voters for Burma’s April 1st by-election, and about 158,000 are listed in Moulmein constituency for by-election to elect a member of parliament to House of Representatives (Pyithu Hluttaw), in which three main parties, NLD, AMDP and USDP will contest.
