Locals to Walk in Protest of Coal-fired Power Project in Aunden Village

-

A group of locals plan to stage a protest against a proposed coal-fired power plant in Aunden Village, Ye Township, Mon State; protesters will be walking in protest through Ye Town on December 14th, according to U Aung Naing Win, Secretary of the Ye Township’s Ye Social Society (YSS) group.

The protest will be organized by YSS, with protestors planning to march from the Shwe Sandaw Pagoda in Ye Town, to Quarter 6 in Ye Town. The locals will be protesting in efforts to raise awareness and provide education concerning potential impacts of the coal-fired power plant, while wearing T-shirts calling for “No Coal”.

“We already submitted the request letter for permission to protest. Whether our request is approved or not, we will continue what we have to do. If it [our request to protest] is not approved, we will still organize the protest,” said U Aung Naing Win.

U Aung Naing Win continued that the protest will be directed at the Union and Mon State governments, because the electric project needed for public use will be overseen by the Union government and accomplished by the Mon State government.

“They verbally approve[d] the plans that we, protestors, will stage a protest by walking, the number of people, our slogans, and our signs. We have actually submitted the protest request to State and District Police offices; the police have already agreed verbally,” stated U Aung Naing Win.

The protesters plan to shout slogans calling to, “Stop the coal-fired power plant project in Aunden Village”; “No need for any other coal-fired power plant projects in the Ye area”; “Toyo Thai must stop and leave, for the betterment of [our] future environment”; and “Article 45 and 390 (b) of the constitution must be respected”.

The protestors will be holding signs stating, “According to Article 45, the Union government must protect the environment. According to Article 390 (b), every citizen is responsible to protect and preserve the environment. The coal-fired power plant project must stop, so as not to damage our environment. We oppose the project of a coal-fired power plant in the Aunden area. We also object to any other kind of coal-fired project in Ye Township. Let’s object the coal-fired plant to preserve our environment”.

The protesters are not permitted to go in, or pass within 800 yards of the Administration Office in Ye Town.

The Toyo Thai Co. Ltd has invested 2,700 million USD for the Aunden Village coal-fired power plant; however, due to the plant’s potentially negative impacts to the environment and local people, YSS states that it will continue to work against the project until it is stopped.

The project has been allocated 48 months to complete construction of the plant; the company plans to commence operations in June 2018. The project will be operate under the Built, Operate Transfer (BOT) system, with a lifespan of 30 years.
