Mon State Food and Drug Administration Department will seize and destroy 61 brands of chili powder currently sold at markets in Mon State which are not suitable for consumption.
After 79 brands of chili powder sold in the state were brought to Nay Pyi Taw for examination, the constituent Aflatoxas B1, which is not suitable for consumption, was found in 61 brands.
“We received the letter from Nay Pyi Taw on November 29. However, we can’t divulge when exactly we will go to seize and destroy those chili powder types. If we discuss this, the sellers of these chili powders will not sell it on the day of the seizure. We also cannot expose the name of those 61 brands that have Aflatoxas B1 as we have not seized them at the market,” said Dr. Phyu Phyu Kim, assistant director of Mon State’s Food and Drug Administration Department.
Dr. Phyu Phyu Kim continued that the 61 chili powder brands sold the most in Mawlamyine Capital, formerly known as Moulmein.
Aflatoxas B1 can cause lung cancer, and other lung related diseases.
At Mon State’s markets, of the 79 chili powder brands that the Mon State’s Food and Drug Supervision Department checked, 76 types are on sale without approval from the department, according to the Food and Drug Administration Department.
Mon State’s Food and Drug Administration Department has tested and checked the samples of different kinds of food at the markets 11 times already from January to October, 2016.
