Heavy Rain Floods Low-Lying Areas in Bilin, Residents Moved to Safety

-

Heavy rain has flooded parts of Bilin Township in Mon State, forcing residents in low-lying areas to temporarily evacuate to safer locations, according to local social rescue teams.

Persistent rainfall has caused the Bilin River to rise rapidly, with the water level reaching less than two feet below the official danger mark.

Floodwater entered homes in Kantharyar Ward and other low-lying neighborhoods on the morning of July 10 as heavy rainfall combined with the rising river level.

Firefighters, social rescue teams and local authorities have helped evacuate households from Kantharyar Ward and nearby flood-prone communities to temporary safe locations.

“When the Bilin River rises, communities along the riverbank are the first to be flooded. We’ve already relocated residents from those areas. If the river continues to rise, more neighborhoods will be affected. The water level is still increasing,” a member of a local social rescue team told IMNA.

Emergency responders, including the Bilin Township Fire Services Department and volunteer rescue organizations, remain on standby to assist residents if flooding worsens.

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) said the Bilin River’s official danger level is 1,022 centimeters. As of 12:30 p.m. on July 10, the river measured 965 centimeters.

The department forecast that the river could rise to around 1,000 centimeters within the next 24 hours and may reach the danger level within the following two days if heavy rainfall continues.

The DMH has advised residents living along the Bilin River and in low-lying areas to closely monitor river conditions and move to safer locations if water levels continue to rise.
