Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the military coup leader currently serving as acting president, won the presidential election held today by the Union Parliament, according to reports.
A total of 584 representatives from the Pyithu Hluttaw (House of Representatives) and Amyotha Hluttaw (House of Nationalities) attended the session and cast their votes through a secret ballot system.

The Speaker of the Union Parliament and the Speaker of the Amyotha Hluttaw cast the first votes, followed by other members of parliament.
According to the results, Min Aung Hlaing secured 429 votes, defeating U Nyo Saw, who received 126 votes, and Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye, who received 29 votes.
Following the vote, Min Aung Hlaing was appointed as the 11th President of Myanmar. U Nyo Saw was appointed as Vice President (1), while Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye was appointed as Vice President (2).
The newly elected president and vice presidents will assume their duties after taking the oath in the Union Parliament and will serve a five-year term.
Some political observers said that Min Aung Hlaing may have to step down from his position as Senior General upon assuming the presidency.
