Myeik–Dawei Highway Closed Again Three Days After Reopening

-

The Myeik–Dawei section of Union Highway No. 8 has been closed again just three days after reopening, with travel suspended since March 31, according to local sources.

The route had initially been closed on February 10 by revolutionary forces due to ongoing clashes along the road, as well as artillery shelling and airstrikes carried out by the military junta, raising security concerns.

After more than a month of closure, the road was reopened on March 27, allowing vehicles to pass through.

However, the route was shut again on March 31, only three days after reopening.

“Given the situation, it’s not surprising that it was closed again. We were lucky to travel to Myeik while it was open—otherwise, we would have been stuck there again,” a local woman said.

The Independent Mon News Agency (IMNA) contacted officials from the revolutionary forces for comment regarding the renewed closure and the security situation along the route, but no response has been received as of the time of reporting.

Following the capture of the Win Wa military camp along the Myeik–Dawei section of Union Highway No. 8 in Thayetchaung Township by joint revolutionary forces, the military junta has reportedly been carrying out daily airstrikes in the area.
