Myanmar’s Ethnic Women Defy a Dark and Broken System

-

March is the month that honors International Women’s Day, and across the world various activities and events are held to celebrate women. During this time, the word “empowerment” is often heard loudly and frequently. However, amid the harsh realities created by the ongoing armed conflict in Myanmar, the phrase “women’s power” carries a far deeper meaning.

Because of the armed conflict Myanmar women are struggling amid political, economic, and social instability, as well as widespread insecurity, yet they continue to support their families and communities. Mothers in displacement camps are fighting every day to feed their children. Housewives are struggling to manage household expenses as the cost of living rises dramatically. Women are also living with deep anxiety for their relatives and loved ones under the threat of the military’s conscription law.

Women are among those who bear the deepest scars of armed conflict.

Amid countless hardships—including the loss of family members and loved ones, displacement from their homes, and the lack of sexual safety—the resilience of women remains remarkable. The strength of a woman lies not only in gentleness but also in the courage to endure hardship and rise again without breaking, no matter how difficult circumstances become.

Throughout successive eras of authoritarian rule, the Myanmar military has entrenched a system of patriarchy and has treated women as instruments of war. As a result, women are no longer safe in areas affected by conflict. In many ethnic regions, hundreds and even thousands of women have been killed or subjected to sexual violence, according to reports from women’s organizations. Justice for these women remains an urgent and unfinished pursuit.

Under the current circumstances, women are forced to survive in increasingly unsafe environments. Yet many women transform fear into strength and continue to carry out their daily responsibilities without fail. Today, honoring women can no longer be limited to ceremonies and words of praise. Meaningful recognition must include fundamental changes that ensure women’s safety, equal participation in decision-making, and the right to live free from fear.

Recognizing the resilience and struggle of Myanmar women amid conflict and oppression can help move society toward a more just future. With deep respect, we honor all ethnic women across Myanmar who continue to stand strong with courage in the face of a dark and broken system.
