The Mon National Primary School in Makatsann Village, Kyaikmaraw Township, has remained closed for the 2024–2025 academic year due to a critical shortage of teachers.
Makatsann Village has only one Mon National Primary School. Students in grades 3 to 7 are now forced to transfer to schools in neighboring Kaw Dun and Kawtkalawt villages to continue their education.
“Without a teacher, students from Makatsann face immense challenges attending schools in other villages. The nearest schools are over a mile away, and the connecting road, which runs through farmland, is in poor condition,” said a local resident.
Despite requests from local residents to the Mon National Education Committee for assistance, no teacher has been assigned to the school. Regarding the matter, although the Mon News Agency contacted responsible officials from the Mon National Education Committee, there has been no response.
While some villages have government schools as an alternative to Mon National Schools, Makatsann Village relies solely on its Mon National Primary School. Local residents express concern about the possibility of the government replacing the school if the situation persists.
“This year, we couldn’t save the Mon National School. Our biggest fear is that continued inaction might lead to the school being converted into a government school. For next year, we hope more attention will be given to this issue and recruit teachers on time,” a resident added.
The Mon National Primary School in Makatsann Village, established in 1999, has been a pillar of the community for decades. The village comprises 40 households, and the school’s closure has disrupted access to education for local children.
